Buyer’s Guide for Dental Insurance and Discount Dental Plans

Browse Common Concerns:

Choosing a Convenient Dentist

It may sound like common sense but taking into consideration how convenient it is to see your dentist goes a long way in determining how satisfied you will be with both that dentist and your dental plan. This section outlines some specific things to consider.

As with any health care provider, it’s normal to form a preference for a particular dentist over time.

  • Are you currently seeing a particular dentist?
  • Would you prefer to keep seeing that dentist?
  • Or, do you live a considerable distance from the nearest dentist?

It’s hard to be choosey about your dentist in that situation. If you fall into either of those categories, the most fool-proof way to keep seeing that dentist you like or to have coverage wherever you can find a dentist is by purchasing a PPO or Indemnity plan.

Remember, there are compromises you’ll have to make for the freedom built into a PPO or Indemnity plan:

  • You generally pay more in premiums,
  • your out-of-pocket costs are generally more and
  • you’ll wait longer before you can start using more expensive benefits.

Again, if you live in an isolated location and don’t have much choice for a dentist, or you are particularly attached to a dentist who doesn’t belong to a network, a preferred provider organization or indemnity plan is most likely the way to go.
