“Cheese It” Before Your Next Dental Visit

Jun 06, 2018

This past Monday was National Cheese Day – or #NationalCheeseDay for social media ninjas.

So what’s that got to do with the price of cheese? Just a reminder in the spirit of the occasion that cheese not only tastes good, but it’s also good for teeth.

In an earlier study involving 68 kids ranging from 12 to 15, Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) researchers found that eating cheese raises the pH level in the mouth due to increased saliva production. Further, certain compounds in cheese protect teeth by adhering to tooth enamel, protecting the teeth from harmful acid.

The study found there are three primary benefits to eating cheese:

  • Cheese is high in casein phosphate. Casein phosphate lowers acidity in the mouth, making it more resistant to decay;
  • Cheese stimulates saliva. Saliva cleanses teeth and keeps tooth acidity low;
  • Cheese forms a protective film around teeth, protecting tooth enamel from acid found in common foods and drinks.

Sweet cheese and crackers, that’s not even all the good news about the healthy perks of cheese for teeth. Your teeth benefit you whether you eat regular or low-fat cheese – as long as it’s real cheese.

Avoid highly processed cheeses and those that squirt from a can. When eating real cheese, a little slice or chunk will do you.  In fact, as little as one-third of an ounce of your favorite cheese eaten throughout a meal, and a finishing bite to round out your eating, will provide the needed oral health benefits.

“Not only are dairy products a healthy alternative to carb or sugar-filled snacks, they also may be considered as a preventive measure against cavities,” says AGD spokesperson Seung-Hee Rhee, DDS.

So, if you want to be a big cheese with your dentist before that next checkup, enjoy some cheese during your next meal. And remember: cheese is like life: it’s always better when you keep it real.
