Military Vets Have New Dental Plan Options

Nov 08, 2018

By Dean George

Atten-hut military vets! Uncle Sam needs you…to pay attention to looming new changes in your dental coverage.

The Military Times recently reported that military beneficiaries of the Tricare Retiree Dental Program need to transition to the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP).

Until now FEDVIP was reserved for federal civilian employees, retirees and their families, but the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has expanded the program to include certain retired uniformed service members and active duty family members of the U.S. military.

The concern of many officials involved with the transition is that Tricare retirees are not automatically enrolled in the new FEDVIP program and they must enroll between Nov. 12th and Dec. 10th of 2018.

Current beneficiaries of the Tricare Retiree Dental Program that fail to enroll between those dates will no longer have dental coverage on Jan. 1st and will have to wait until the succeeding open enrollment season next fall to enlist in the program.

According to the Military Times there are 1.6 million beneficiaries currently enrolled in the Tricare Retiree Dental program, and 1.3 million eligible retirees who qualify but aren’t currently enrolled.

“My biggest fear is that there are going to be many retirees who are not going to get the word until they try to go to the dentist,” said Frankl Yoakum, the executive director of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States.

A retired Army sergeant major, Yoakum added, “They’ll find out they have no dental coverage. They missed the boat…so they have to wait until next year’s open season to make a choice for 2020.”

Fortunately, there is no open season or enrollment deadlines for brokers offering individual dental plans.  Regardless of rank, military service or civilian status, customers at Dental Insurance Store can shop, compare plans and enroll anytime in HMO, PPO or discount dental plans beginning at just $8.95 a month.
